CSRD without spreadsheet stress: reporting on measured data.

The CSRD is the European directive that requires large companies to report on sustainability with the same rigor as on finances. Even if you are not (yet) covered yourself, you will deal with it: customers with reporting obligations ask their suppliers for emissions data, because your emissions are their supply-chain emissions.

Where most companies get stuck

The problem is rarely unwillingness, but data collection. Consumption data is scattered across invoices, grid operator portals and separate meters per site. Every quarter, someone cuts and pastes it all together in a spreadsheet — error-prone, not reproducible, and by definition after the fact.

An auditor or customer who digs deeper wants traceability: where does this number come from, from which measurement, over which period? 'From the spreadsheet' is not an answer.

Measuring at the source

The sustainable route is the same as the cheap one: automate the measurement. Every site metered in real time, consumption and generation collected automatically, emissions calculated with fixed factors and recorded with the measurement as the source. Reporting then becomes a printout instead of a project.

The side benefit is at least as valuable: the same data that feeds your reporting also shows where the consumption sits. Every kilowatt-hour you do not consume, you do not have to account for either — reporting and cost reduction drink from the same source.

A practical start

• Map which sites already have smart metering and where data is missing.
• Centralize consumption, generation and invoices in one system instead of separate portals.
• Automate the emissions calculation and keep the trace back to the source measurement.
• Check invoices against measured consumption — discrepancies are immediate money.
