The day-ahead market: how automated energy trading works.

Power has no fixed price. On the day-ahead market (in the Netherlands via the EPEX exchange), the price for every hour of the next day is set each afternoon, based on supply and demand. Plenty of sun and wind? Cheap hours, sometimes even negative ones. Still and cold? Expensive hours.

Those differences within a single day are structural — and they are exactly where flexible companies earn. Not by speculating, but by shifting consumption, storage and generation to the hours where it pays most.

What you need to take part

Three ingredients determine whether energy trading works for you:

• Flexibility: something that can shift in time — a battery, controllable cooling, a charging plaza, adjustable generation.
• A dynamic contract or direct market access, so the hourly prices actually reach you.
• A system that forecasts and decides: prices, your own consumption and your generation a day ahead, translated into an hour-by-hour control schedule.

Why this has to be automated

Bids for tomorrow close around noon every day. That means forecasting, optimizing and bidding all over again, daily — and adjusting on the day itself when the weather or your production turns out differently. As a day job for a human it is hopeless; as a task list for an algorithm it is routine.

One thing matters here: the system must stay within your rules. Your production always comes first, your backup reserve stays untouched, and imbalance risk is monitored continuously. Returns are nice; operational security is the condition.

From cost item to revenue model
