Energy Hubs: sharing capacity across a business park.

Operating alone, individual businesses hit a hard ceiling. Connected together, there is ample room to scale. How an Energy Hub works, the legal frameworks required, and why the technology is actually the easy part.
On the average business park, nobody peaks at the same time. The hauler draws power for its e-trucks at night, the manufacturer runs during the day, the office peaks around noon and the solar roof feeds back exactly then. Add all those profiles together and the combined peak stays far below the sum of the individual connections.
An Energy Hub cashes in on that difference: companies share their capacity and energy locally, so the park as a whole can do more than the separate connections allow. One company grows in the room another is not using at that moment.
What needs to be arranged
A hub is three things at once — and all three have to be right:
- Technical: real-time metering and control across all participants, so the shared limit is never exceeded.
- Financial: automatic settlement per interval — who used what, who supplied what, under which agreement.
- Organizational: clear agreements between participants and coordination with the grid operator on the shared capacity.
The pitfall: starting with the organization
Many hub initiatives get bogged down in meetings, because nobody can say what it will deliver. Turn it around: first model what the participants' profiles make possible together. With that result on the table, the conversation gets concrete — joining becomes a business case instead of a principle.
After that, the settlement has to be beyond any doubt. The moment participants feel the split is off, trust evaporates. Automatic, transparent settlement per interval is not a luxury but the condition every hub lives on.
