A microgrid is a local energy grid: your generation, storage and loads connected into one whole, with one brain guarding the balance. Under normal conditions it simply works alongside the public grid. You see the difference the moment it counts.
When the grid drops out, the microgrid automatically disconnects and keeps running under its own power — that is called island mode. Critical processes get priority, the battery and your generation take over supply, and your production notices as little as possible.
When a microgrid fits
Three situations in which a microgrid proves itself:
- Continuity is worth money: losing cooling, production or data systems immediately costs you revenue or stock.
- Your connection is tight: within the microgrid you match generation and consumption locally, so you ask less of the grid.
- You already have assets: a solar roof, a battery and controllable loads are the building blocks — the microgrid turns them into one system.
The brain is the real work
The hardware of a microgrid is familiar territory: inverters, switches, a battery. The difference is in the control system. It has to know every second what is being generated, consumed and stored, switch between grid and island mode without a hitch, and meanwhile optimize energy costs as if nothing is going on.
So with every microgrid proposal, ask not only what gets installed, but who does the controlling — and what happens in the moments when it gets tense. A microgrid without an autonomous brain is an expensive collection of loose parts.
